Hard Labor:

HARD LABOR was inspired by a photograph of farm laborers at rest, taken by Cuban photographer Raul Corrales. In it, the humble and ubiquitous crocus sack is portrayed as emblematic of both the fruits and the pains of agricultural labor, human exploitation, and the attendant drudgery when such efforts are involuntary, as during bondage, revolution, or imprisonment. As one contemplates sitting upon its gathered folds, one naturally wonders whether its contents reflect the fruits or the pain of the agricultural experience.
